Five on Friday - Items We Used for Our Southern Snow Day

Well, I never thought that I’d be posting about items that we used for a snow day, but here we are!!  We got two inches last week which is a LOT for Georgia, and everything was closed for four whole days because of it.

Today I thought it would be fun to share a few of the items that we used last week, a couple of which were actually bought at the last minute in a panic.  Haha. And please note that we do not typically get snow here during the winter, so if you live up north or somewhere that gets a lot of snow and super freezing temperatures for months on-end, you will definitely need more items / better quality items than these.  I am just sharing what worked for us here in the south.  :o)

O N E – Jackets

While it does get below freezing here many days during the winter, the daytime temps are usually pretty moderate, and therefore, our kids typically just wear hoodies or light jackets.  Because it rarely snows, neither of our kids had a real winter jacket that would stand up to the cold and the moisture of the snow, so once the forecast started looking pretty serious for snow, I panic-bought puffer jackets for each of them.

Olivia chose this light blue jacket, and she LOVES it.  It’s fully lined, water resistant, and warm.  It has a hooded neckline, mitten cuffs (her favorite part), a full-length zippered front with a storm flap, and of course, pockets.  She said it kept her super warm, and the best part was that it didn’t break the bank.  I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on something that I know is not going to get much use.  We sized up to an XL, so she should be able to wear it for at least one more winter.  It comes in two other colors including pink and navy floral and we highly recommend it.  It’s actually now on clearance, too… would’ve been nice if that had been the case a couple of weeks ago.  Haha.

Target was sold out of all options for Jacob in the sizes that he needed, so we turned to Walmart for his jacket.
He ended up selecting this one – it’s lightweight but warm, it has a full-length zipper, it’s water resistant, and it has pockets.  This one does not have a hood, but Jacob always wears a hoodie or a beanie, so it wasn’t a dealbreaker.

T W O – Boots

I bought my Hunter boots about ten years ago, and they were such a great investment.  While pricey up front, they’ll last my whole life, and they’re great for rainy days and snow days.  I have the tall gloss rainboots in two colors and I couldn’t love them more.  This short version is really cute, too, and I wouldn’t mind having a pair of those as well.

The kids had no appropriate footwear for snow either, so I was able to snag two pairs of these boots for them a couple of days before the snow rolled in.  They kept their feet nice and dry so we didn’t have to worry about wet tennis shoes and freezing wet toes.  We also sized up on these, so if there’s a chance that we get snow again in the next couple of years, I’m hoping they will still fit.  And again, they can use these for rainy days, too, if they want.

T H R E E – Hats

I bought this hat for myself a few years ago, and it’s the best thing!  It has a layer of fleece inside for maximum warmth, it’s stylish, and it comes in tons of colors.  The best part?  It’s only $9.99!

F O U R – Gloves

Brian and I used to go skiing every year before we had kids, so I do actually know what it’s like to spend lengthy periods in the extreme cold and snow, and therefore, I also know the type of gear that one needs to survive for hours on end in those conditions.  Since we used to ski, I do have real winter weather gear, and my old ski gloves came in handy as Olivia was able to borrow them to play in the snow.  While I can’t find my exact gloves online anymore (they’re probably close to 20 years old now – LOL), these are very similar.

These gloves have a waterproof membrane with 3M insulation that provides extra warmth and continues to insulate even in a wet environment.  They have an adjustable wrist strap to prevent water and snow from getting inside, and they have touchscreen fingertips so you can use your phone while wearing them.  These are highly rated at 4.4 / 5 starts with more than 6,000 reviews, and they come in pink and black, along with lots of different sizing options.

F I V E – Fun Stuff to Keep Busy Indoors

Because we’re not used to the extreme cold or snow, we took lots of breaks throughout the day to warm up, and on our breaks, we had to bust out all of the cozy things…

This 1,000-piece puzzle that we’re enjoying putting together…

My favorite hot tea

And hot chocolate

Along with all of the special fixings

And, of course, Olivia used her new digital camera to document EVERYTHING.  I love that she loves taking pictures and videos as much as her Momma.  :o)

  1. You did great for last minute snow shopping! Puffer jackets are great for the snow and we usually use our rain boots here when we have snow too. I love all the indoor items, especially that Lego puzzle. Have a good weekend!

  2. Simon didn't have good gloves so he had to borrow Dave's. I was looking for a pair for him, but figured he'd just lose them anyway.

  4. I have three pair of Hunter boots and I still just love them to this day and they last forever! Mr. Nine and I actually were just talking about this the other day. What do y’all down there in the south do when you have a snow day, I know you guys aren’t really equipped, so this was a fun read!
