Bible Verses I Want to Memorize This Year

Over the last 18 months, I read the entire Bible from start to finish, and I did a Bible study alongside it.  The whole journey was lifechanging, and along the way, I found many verses that stood out to me.  I decided this year to read the Bible again, along with a new study to accompany it, and in addition to that, I felt the urge to start memorizing scripture.

While I do have an all-time favorite Bible verse that I memorized 15 years ago as an adult (read on to see which one it is), I haven’t memorized any other scripture since I was a child.  I’m not sure why I stopped memorizing scripture as an adult… it was unintentional, but it’s something that I want to be more intentional about going forward.

Ideally, I’d like to memorize at least one verse per month this year.  The ones that stood out to me during my Bible reading journey last year are the ones I’m sharing today, some of which practically bounced off the page at me when I read them.  And please note that a few of these are verses that I already know, but I couldn’t have told you which books, chapters, or verse numbers they were from, so I’m adding them to the list to get those parts memorized, too.

In no particular order, here they are (and please note that these are not all from the same translation as a couple of them were verses that I read in other books)…

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.  See, I am doing a new thing!”

– Isaiah 43:18-19

“For he who has died is free from sin.”

– Romans 6:7

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

– 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”  (I read an entire book on this one Bible verse, and it was SO GOOD.)

– Philippians 4:8

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

– Matthew 11:28

“Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

– Nehemiah 8:10

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

– Philippians 4:13

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

– Galatians 6:9

“Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray.  The one who does what is righteous, just as he is righteous.  The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning.”

– 1 John 3:7-8

“We love because he first loved us.”

– 1 John 4:19

“Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him;”

– Job 13:15

“Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

– Hebrews 11:1

“We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.  And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”

– Romans 5:3-5

“Whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”

– Hebrews 11:6

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”

– Psalm 136:1

“Do not be anxious about anything.”

– Philippians 4:6

“Be still and know that I am God.”

– Psalm 46:10

There you have it – 17 Bible verses that I hope to eventually add to my brain so I can access them any time I need them.  <3

And to close, here is the verse that I memorized 15 years ago… it’s my favorite verse in the whole Bible.  I worry about everything, and I overanalyze everything, so this verse could not be more perfect for me…

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

– Proverbs 3:5

This Bible verse got me through a miscarriage, devastating nerve damage and seven years of chronic pain after childbirth, the vertigo/dizziness/tension I’ve been experiencing for the past 18 months, and many other things.  It has always been comforting during hard times because it reminds me that there are just some things that we are not meant to understand.  And rather than seeking to understand every single circumstance to find peace, we should learn to let things go, because real, true, lasting peace can only be found in God.

If you have a favorite Bible verse, I’d love to know what it is!

Happy Monday, y’all!
