Once upon a time in late 2013 I was very preggo with an itty bitty baby girl named Olivia. It had already been decided to do a pink and grey baby nursery but I just couldn’t find anything that I loved enough to hang on the wall over her crib. I knew I wanted her name over her crib, but I wanted something more than that... something as unique and special as this precious baby girl for which I had always prayed.
I have always loved polka
dots and I thought it would be really great to somehow incorporate those with
her name, but I knew I didn’t want wall
decals or vinyl or anything like that.
I wanted something soft and delicate… ethereal.
Enter embroidery hoops.
I vaguely remembered seeing an article online about someone decorating with embroidery hoops, and when I just so happened to
pass them in Hobby Lobby one day, a light bulb went off in my head, an idea was
formed, and I ended up dreaming up perhaps one of my favorite creations ever –
Olivia’s embroidery hoop wall.
I had never used embroidery
hoops before, so I was a bit hesitant about taking on something foreign like
that, but y’all, it was so easy!! Anybody
can do this! Another great thing about this is that it is completely customizable to match any décor you already have,
and it is also easily interchangeable. When
the décor in the room changes, all you have to do is pop the old fabric out and
pop some new fabric in to match your new décor.
And the very best part? This entire project was SO CHEAP considering it fills an entire wall!
Here is what you will need
to make your own wall:
- Embroidery Hoops – as many
as you need in whatever sizes you need (I used 4 12-inch, 2 10-inch, 2 8-inch,
and 5 4-inch hoops)
- Wood Letters for the name
- Fabric Swatches (I used 13
different ones… a different one for each hoop but you could repeat some of the same if you like!)
- Nails
Step One
Lay the letters on the
ground to spell out the name and place the empty hoops around them to see what
works best for the overall layout. Keep moving everything around until it looks just right and until it is the correct size to fit your wall. As you can see, I rearranged mine several times throughout the process until I had them looking just right.
I have always shopped for wood letters at Michael's, but in recent years, Amazon has completely upped their game and they have pretty much anything you could ever want when it comes to wood letters. I am completely and utterly obsessed with these and I think I feel a project coming on!!!!
They also have a huge array of embroidery hoops in all shapes and sizes for SUPER CHEAP. You can even buy them in packs of different sizes like this one.

Step Two
Once you are pleased with
the overall layout, take your fabric swatches and lay them loosely on top of
each of the hoops just to get an idea of what patterns and colors work the best
together. Keep moving them around until they look just right. Again, Amazon has a million different options and I find them to be way cheaper than Hobby Lobby or Michaels.
Step Three
Once you have your overall design, snap a picture so you won’t forget where everything goes, and then it’s
time to spray paint. Spray paint your
letters and each of the embroidery hoops with whichever color you choose. We used white spray paint for Olivia’s wall
and it looks nice and crisp. I also
can’t help but wonder how amazing metallic gold hoops would look with the right
color scheme!! (I think I might be
formulating something spectacular as I type this!)
Step Four
When your hoops have dried,
lay them all back out in place on the ground and set your fabric back on top of
each one so you don’t forget which fabric goes where. Once that is done, insert your fabric into
each of the hoops taking care to pull the sides tight so the front is nice and
smooth. Trim any excess fabric off of
the back. Repeat for all of the hoops.
Step Five
Hang the letters for the
name using the Command Strips.
Step Six
Hang the hoops with nails.
All done!!
It is seriously that
easy! And it will make a statement like
no other!
Even if you're not in need of decorations for a baby nursery or a child's room, you could still use the embroidery hoops and fabric to decorate anywhere else in your house! Oh, the possibilities!

ReplyDeleteI have embroidery hoop decor in Gabbie's and in Simon's rooms! I actually used some of their is but stained baby clothes as the fabric which provides for great memories. Maybe I'll post about them one day too. ��
