The Weekend - A Birthday Party, Finishing GG, & the No-Paci Aftermath

We have a couple of very busy weeks coming up so I’m not quite ready for Monday.  Then again, when is anybody really ever ready for Monday?

Anyway, we had a great weekend that was pretty slow aside from a birthday party on Saturday morning.  Friday evening, we decided to head out for Mex for dinner, and then we stopped by Lowe’s to get a new lawnmower since ours croaked a few weeks ago.  Our back yard looked like a jungle before B finally cut it on Saturday morning!

We decided to head home after that and put the kids down at their regular bedtimes since it was Olivia’s second night without her paci.  A big thunderstorm popped up just as we were kissing them goodnight, so B ended up having to stay in Olivia’s room with her anyway since she’s so terrified of thunder.

After they were asleep, we finally, finally finished watching all of the new Gilmore Girls episodes.  YOU GUYS, I had heard that there was a lot of hype over the last four words of the last episode but OH MAN they still shocked me!!  I can’t believe that ending!  Somebody PLEASE tell me that they’re doing some more!!

Saturday morning we were up with the sun thanks to two small kids who shall remain nameless, so I made some homemade chocolate chip waffles and bacon for breakfast and the kids watched a few minutes of cartoons while B and I got some stuff done around the house.  Mowing for him, and laundry for me.  Ugh.

Jacob worked on another summer homework journal entry – this one was all about our 4th of July – and then it was time for us to get ready for an early birthday party.  We had to swing by my parents’ house on the way so I could put my two cents in about their new area rug (placement, size, etc.) and then we headed to the party.  The party was at our favorite local entertainment center that has a bowling alley, bumper cars, laser tag, and a ton of arcade games.  Jacob was really excited since he loves that place so much, and he was also really excited to see some of his classmates who he hasn’t seen much since school got out.

The kiddos bowled and had hot dogs to start.  Jacob had never bowled before but, man, you would have never known that.  He looked like an old pro!  They had the bumpers in since these kids were mostly 5 and 6 and then they also had one of the little things that you can roll the ball down in case the kids aren’t big enough to roll them themselves.  Jacob started off using it, but then just started rolling the 7 lb. ball down all by himself for the rest of the time.

The bowling alley had these giant movie screens over the alleys and they were playing nonstop 90’s music videos so I felt like I was in junior high and high school all over again.  It was wild!  I hadn’t seen some of those videos in 20 years!

Anyhoo, after bowling the kids all lined up for bumper cars.  Every single child there was measured to ensure they were tall enough, and every single child was approved except for Jacob.  There is one other child in Jacob’s class who is the exact same height as J, and for some reason they let him ride, but not Jacob.  I was so upset for him.  He was literally like a half inch too shy to ride and I told them it was fine with me if he did, but they told me they couldn’t let him.

Poor thing had to stand there and watch all of the kids at the party have fun without him.  He didn’t cry, but he did want me to pick him up and he turned his face away from them, so I know he was upset about it.  It just about broke my Mommy heart.  The place was really nice, though, and they put $5 extra on his players card that he got to bring home as a party prize, so that was really nice of them.

After bumper cars, the kids went back to our VIP area in the bowling alley for cake and presents, and then they all got to play laser tag.  Fortunately there was no height limit for this one and he was able to do that.

When laser tag was over, it was time to say goodbye, but not before one last ride!

By the time we got home, Brian had just put Olivia down for her nap – her first one at home without her paci – and he said that she never whined or cried and she fell asleep almost immediately.  What?!

Saturday evening we headed to church a few minutes early and we let the kids hide two of the painted rocks that we had found downtown on Fourth of July.  They were really excited to hide some for other kids to find.

Both kids were ANGELS in church, and then we headed to Longhorn with my parents, grandparents, and aunt and uncle for dinner.  We enjoyed steak, mashed potatoes, salad, and wine and we had a lot of good conversation.  I just love my family so much!

We put J and O down for bed as soon as we got home, and the second I left Olivia’s room all hell broke loose.  Girlfriend started SCREAMING because she didn’t have her paci and I ended up having to stand in her doorway until she fell asleep.  As much as I would love to hold her or lay with her, I’m just trying really hard not to create anymore bad habits that we’ll have to break down the road.  I’m hoping I can slowly wean her off of having to be in the room with her until she falls asleep.  I have a feeling it’s going to take some time, though.  Gosh, why does parenting have to be so hard?!

After she fell asleep it was pretty late, so we didn’t have a whole lot of time until we needed to get to bed, but we decided to go ahead and watch the pilot episodes of two different shows since we’re done with Gilmore Girls.  Some of B’s clients have been telling him about the new show Catastrophe on Amazon Prime.  It’s a sitcom about a guy from the U.S. who travels to London for work on a business trip and gets a lady pregnant.  It’s supposed to be really hilarious and it’s only about 24 minutes per episode so it’s short.  We both thought it was pretty funny, but I’m having trouble loving the characters so far.  I like the guy better than the girl, but I’m hoping that I will eventually like it a little more after I watch a bit more of it.  Have any of you watched it?  Thoughts?

And if you’re considering watching it, just be aware that it’s most definitely R rated.  Lots and lots of F-bombs and a bit of nudity, so WAIT UNTIL THE KIDS GO TO BED BEFORE WATCHING!  Haha.

After that, we watched the first episode of Bloodline and ohhhh how wonderful it is to have Coach Taylor back in my life again.  Sigh… I love him.  And I’m intrigued by the show.  It was good, y’all.  A little dark for my taste, but I think I can look past that as long as I can watch Kyle Chandler every evening.  ;o)  Oh, and fun fact, he’s a UGA grad!  GO DAWGS!

Sunday, my MIL nor my Mom cooked, so we were on our own all day.  I didn’t even know what to do being responsible for all of those meals!  Haha.  We ended up going for pizza for lunch since we hadn’t had it in a while, and on the way we got detoured because THIS was what we came up on just off of our exit to get on the highway.

No idea what happened but some people are saying that a car hit a tree and broke the car in half.  All I know is that I saw a HUGE fire and lots of smoke, so I’m praying that all is well with the people inside.  There were police and state troopers and firemen everywhere, so hopefully they were able to get everything under control.

After lunch, we took the kiddos to the playground.  The humidity was only around 58% so it felt SO much cooler… it was actually kind of pleasant outside.  That doesn’t happen a lot here in Georgia in July.  After leaving the playground we walked around the park a bit, and the kids found another painted rock, and Jacob was so sweet and he gave it to another little girl who was walking by.

We ended up cutting our walk short because the mosquitoes were AWFUL.  I had eleven bites by the time we left.  Ugh.

Sunday evening we decided to be lazy and go just go to Cracker Barrel to have breakfast for dinner.  Eggs, grits, bacon, pancakes, and coffee... mm mm good!  After dinner we sat out on our back porch and did Mad Libs with the kiddos... y'all remember those?!  Jacob is really into them now, so it's a lot of fun to see him cracking up over the same silly game that I used to laugh at when I was little.

I’ll be back tomorrow to finally share my BAR CART!

And don’t forget that our monthly Girl Chat link-up is this Thursday… we’ll be discussing what we would do with a million dollars… join us, won’t you?

  4. That looks an awesome place for a birthday party! Poor Jacob! That's really annoying they didn't let him on, but I guess they made up for it :) I am so intrigued by these painted rocks, I wonder if people are doing it around us?

  5. I haven't heard of that show but we have been watching Patriot and really like it too. Sorry about the paci panic, I hope that hurdle gets jumped soon for mama's sake. Oh and our lawn mower broke a couple of weeks ago too. After MUCH troubleshooting he diagnosed that the stupid choke chain wasn't working. We were SO close to buying a new one too.

  6. That birthday party looked like lots of fun! I watched your IG story and saw the music videos--I miss watching music videos! When I was little (elementary school) my parents would wake me up early for school, but since it didn't take me long to get ready I would sit on their bed and watch music videos on VH1 and sometimes pop up video...do you remember that one?

  8. What a great weekend-isn't a cooler day in July so refreshing! It doesn't get nearly as hot here in Minnesota, but we do usually get a string of a few weeks this time of year that sits in the 90's and sometimes gets up towards 100 with terrible humidity, and I always kind of dread it. Cooler days are a savior! And I feel you on the sleep training, I have been laying with Jackson lately because he has wanted to cuddle for the first time in months so I have been caving..but I know it creates bad habits! Hopefully she starts sleeping ell without the paci soon!!

  10. What a fun weekend!
Can you even believe how Gilmore Girls ended?!?! 😬 Like my heart hurt! 😂
I need to watch Friday night lights.
Poor Olivia with her pacis. Ella was the same way. Homegirl loved her pacis. But I promise one day it will be a distant memory.

  11. Sounds like a fun weekend! I can't believe that about Jacob - poor fella! At least they gave you those credits. :). You and Olivia look adorable as usual. Oh and those painted rocks are soooo fun! There's currently a group here in our town that paints rocks and places them all around town - such a cute idea. We may need to make some too! :)

  12. Don't give up on Catastrophe! It is hilarious! I felt the same way about the cast the first couple episodes but then I loved it. Kept me laughing (and cringing, it's so awkward) through all of it.

  13. That painted rock thing is HUGE around here. My kids can spot the rocks before I do. I haven't found one yet. The ending of Gilmore Girls had me like WHOA! I hope you have a great start to your week!

  19. I feel so bad for Jacob and not being able to go on the bumper cars. I bet it hurt your mommy heart. My BIL said Bloodline is really good as well and I think we are going to start it soon too. Glad it was an overall good weekend. I hope everyone is ok in that fire.

  20. We went to a similar entertainment place this weekend for Trip's birthday. It was nice to have so many different activities all in one place. So did you totally hate the musical GG episode? Ugh that one was just awful! I kind of love and hate how the series ended. Ok, and I know nobody loves unsolicited parenting advice, but I was wondering if Olivia has any snuggly animals that play music or light up? Both of my kids use the infant lamb with rain, whale noise, jungles, etc. every night. When we had to get a second one, Ari got a newer model that she can switch to so it plays the music whenever she would cry or someone started talking. Just a thought of something that can help with sleep time. Hope you have a great Monday!

  22. Poor Jacob with the ride at the party. That just flat out stinks. What a good boy. I'm sure at that age I would have thrown a huge fit, ha. Sweet boy. Looks like you really did a lot this weekend, and good luck with the no paci thing. Definitely not easy!

  23. Oh my goodness - bowling with the kiddos? SO fun! I can't wait till my boys are old enough to go bowling with us! Also, your children sound so sweet. Love.

  25. I loved your stories from Cracker Barrel. We don't have one close but when we go, I always get sucked into the store part ;) Lucy has those watermelon rain boots! Getting rid of pacifiers and potty training are my least favorite parenting chores to date. Hope you have a good week with swimming lessons! xoxo ERIN

  26. So much fun going on! Bowling looks like so much fun! So random but my Dad actually works at cracker barrel here and there just to keep busy and I think it's secretly for the store discount lol. Beautifully Candid

I am dreading the paci take-away! We are at 15 months and only use it for nap and bedtime but man it is nice then.

    1. Ugh, girl, it's HARD! It was the absolute worst with Jacob, but I think Olivia is going to recover a little quicker than he did. She did pretty well Sunday evening and then last night as well, so we'll see how tonight goes!

  28. Oh man, I really need to finish the Gilmore Girls series. I can’t wait for the new episodes. What a fun place to have a birthday party! I am so sorry Jacob didn’t get to ride. Such a bummer that they let the other kid the same height ride. That makes my heart sad for him. I am sure he was disappointed. I’m so happy they put an extra $5 on his card, though! That smoke and accident sounds frightening. Hope all is well. A little girl started the rocks thing in our town and we can’t wait to join.

  32. I'm sorry Jacob wasn't tall enough for the bumper cars. Maybe you can take him back soon. I've just recently heard about these painted rocks. It sounds like a fun thing to paint, hide and also discover them.
