Things to Remember About Right Now

Life flies, you guys.  In just ten short days my youngest baby will be three years old.  Three.  I’ve been all kinds of sentimental these last few weeks even thinking about it, and I’m at the point where my brain and heart are in a tug-of-war over wanting another baby since we officially have no babies in the house anymore.  Spoiler alert – not going to happen!  ;o)

While I sure miss the leg rolls, the coos, and that sweet newborn scent, not having babies in the house can be all kinds of amazing as well!  We now have two potty-trained kids so – no more diapers!  And not having to carry a diaper bag in addition to my purse has been the best these last couple of weeks… my shoulders and arms are thanking me.  On top of those things, we now have two kids that can (mostly) communicate their needs, (mostly) entertain themselves if need be, and they (mostly) don’t need to be watched every. single. darn. second.  Plus, they’re actually lots of fun to be around (mostly).

I guess you could say that it’s liberating no longer having a baby in the house.  It does sadden me to know that those days are behind us, and I know that the little things in life will be forgotten all too quickly, so I want to capture them here in this little space of mine, so I can preserve them for years to come.

O N E – Having a Changing Table

That little changing table area on Olivia’s dresser… we officially took it down a couple of weekends ago and it has been replaced with a picture frame and an Elsa pillow.  We haven’t used it in a long time – months actually – but for some reason I just couldn’t bring myself to get rid of it until now.  And it’s still killing me.

T W O – Having Other Baby Gear in the House

Last year we sold most of the kids’ old baby gear, but I had been holding on to the Pack N Play and the kids’ shared high chair.  Both have been collecting dust for some weeks, months if we’re talking about the high chair.  Last weekend I finally decided to put both up for sale and wouldn’t you know that the Pack N Play was snatched up immediately, with a possible sale for the high chair already as well.  We will be sending them both to their new owners soon and I can hardly stand it because once those items are gone, all of the baby gear will officially be gone as well.

T H R E E – Olivia’s Outfit Flat-Lays

Olivia has always been extremely independent, and she has been dressing herself for nearly a year.  She does not let me assist her, therefore, she puts everything on herself.  During these last few weeks she has taken to laying her clothes out on the floor before she puts them on.  And she has to do that.  If you don’t let her lay them out, she throws a massive tantrum and refuses to get dressed.

As soon as she pulls them out of the closet and drawers, she meticulously lays out each item and even takes care to spread them out so there are no wrinkles.  It’s like she’s doing her very own flat-lays!  Haha.  Maybe we have a future blogger on our hands?!

And for the record, I know what you’re thinking…

And no, I do not do that with my own clothes so she did not get it from me!  Haha.

F O U R – Jacob Wears His Sunglasses… in the Dark?

Y’all, I know I’ve mentioned this on here before, but it just never gets old.  Jacob is not a morning person.  And he hates bright lights when he first wakes up.  Or ever for that matter.  So I kid you not, each morning when I come down the stairs, Brian, Jacob, and Olivia are all sitting around the breakfast table in complete blackness, and Jacob is almost always wearing sunglasses.  I mean, I have no idea how he can even see anything because I certainly can’t see anything and I’m not even wearing sunglasses!

F I V E – Raspberry Fingers

You guys may have already seen this on Instagram, but I had to mention it here to keep it safely stored in the blog archives.

We eat loads of fruit in our house so we always have lots of different things on hand – strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, grapes, raspberries.   When it comes to raspberries, both kids must be served exactly five because they both put one on each of their little fingers and wave them around.  As they get eaten, they shout how many are left (FIVE!!… FOUR!!… THREE!!... THREE, MOMMY!!!!… TWO!…DADDY, TWO!!... ONE!… ZERO!), and by golly, you better be paying attention because they will shout over and over again until you listen.

I know all too soon they’ll be eating raspberries just like everyone else, so this is something that I never want to forget.

S I X – Olivia and the Bread Crust

Every morning when I make Jacob’s lunch for school, I cut the bread crusts off and pile them up on a paper towel right next to the sandwich.  Every morning Olivia walks over, grabs the whole pile of crust, and then proceeds to carry it around with her for the rest of the morning until she has eaten them all.  Girl loves crust!  Most little kids won’t even eat it attached to the sandwich, but she loves it completely by itself.  It makes me laugh every time.

S E V E N – Jacob’s Sleeping Bag

For several months, Jacob was waking up in the middle of the night (occasionally) and he was creeping into our room and climbing into bed with us.  Lately, it has tapered off, and instead, it is now Olivia who is creeping in during the night.  Since there’s not enough room for four in our bed, we decided to lay out Jacob’s sleeping bed on the floor in our room, so when he does come in, he can have a comfy and warm place to sleep.  It rarely happens these days, but I love that his little sleeping bag is a permanent fixture in our room right now.  It may be an eyesore, but gosh, I’m going to miss it one day!

What are some things that you are going to miss?

  7. So sweet. I keep thinking I am going to miss Emily's obsession with Minnie... but it hasn't gone anywhere. True story, I STILL have our pack n' play. It is the only thing I kept but I kept thinking if someone comes over with a baby or I babysit, it might be handy to have. I think it has only been used 3 times :P.

  10. When my kids turned 3 and 5 these were both such milestone birthdays for me as a mom. I must say, I am really loving all the independence my kids are gaining and how I can do things and they are entertaining themselves but still need me. I loved this post because this will be a great post for you to look back on and remember.

    1. It really is nice to have independent kiddos again after almost six years of caring for someone every single waking second. Plus, I love that we can talk about their days now around the dinner table!

  11. I'm both looking forward to getting rid of the baby gear (because space!) and dreading it (because no more babies!) at the same time. I love that Olivia lays out her outfits! I'm impressed with her style, btw. When Mila dresses herself without me trying to point her in the right direction, she usually looks like a hot mess, lol. Loved reading these things. Thanks for joining our link up!!

  12. Awe, this is such a sweet post, Lindsay! I can't even begin to imagine how hard it is to let go of the fact that you know longer have baby babies in your home. But like you mentioned, I bet it's so nice to not have to carry everything and the kitchen sink when you go out. Loved reading this, your family is just precious. Literally #familygoals <3

  19. My list would go on and on and on. Sometimes I feel so melancholy that my girls are getting bigger. Last night I walked in to give Hadley one more kiss goodnight, and I found her asleep with a unicorn hat on (one that Sadie wore for Halloween last year). I roared with laughter seeing my sleeping girl with that on her head. That kind of stuff. This is the sweetest post and I'm glad I read it today!

  20. How cute are those raspberry fingers and the little sleeping bag? So many bittersweet moments, my girl is only 4 months and I'm already missing so much about when she was first born so I'm savoring every second and am prepping myself to looking forward to her talking, laughing, and helping herself to things <3

  22. Awe those little details are just so precious. I love that Olivia picks out her own outfit, how cute. Those raspberry fingers are adorable. I remember when I used to sneak into my moms room in the middle of the night. I would sleep at the foot of her bed, on the floor, being extra cautious never to wake her lol.
