Our Freezing, Non-Snowy Weekend

Well friends, I’m sorry to say that the weekend has come and gone and we got not one single snowflake.  :o(

We watched the weather all day Friday, and unfortunately awoke Saturday morning to a frozen yard rather than any snow.  The rain stopped just as it finally got cold enough to snow, and left us with frozen dead grass instead of a winter wonderland.  Oh well, maybe next time!

Friday I was off with Jacob since he was still out of school, and we had such a great day together!  We kicked it off with breakfast at Panera followed by a trip to Target.  He asked for a Hot Wheels and even though he already has a hundred at home (twenty of which he just received for Christmas), I obliged and I was shocked when he picked one out in about two seconds flat.  He usually takes for-eh-verrrr to decide which one he wants.

After Target, we ran to Hobby Lobby where I did some damage with my Christmas gift cards and then we went to a local entertainment center to play some games.  The day was freezing and it rained nonstop, so Jacob enjoyed using his little umbrella that he got for Christmas last year.

We had lunch at home and then snuggled on the couch for a bit to wind down, and then he played with kinetic sand while I put away some of the new goodies that I had bought (look at that pom pom garland and that gold pineapple!) and then finished getting my planner all set up for 2017.  I’m so behind!

Brian and Olivia got home in the late afternoon and since the “winter storm” was rolling in, we had a low-key evening at home.  We built a fire in the fire place, made a pizza, and then had a family home video viewing night.  Which, may I say, we don’t do often enough.  We showed the kids loads of old videos – from when they were born to their first times eating veggies to their first steps.  Olivia kept referring to herself in the third person – “Look at her!”  “Look what she’s doing!”  It was so funny to watch them both react to seeing themselves so small.

After the babies went to bed, B and I snuggled by the fire and watched Shark Tank and a Gilmore Girls… we are getting close to being done with season two and I am loving it!  B, not so much!  Ha!

Saturday Jacob came running in and saying that he didn’t see any snow (bummer, dude) and then we spent the day indoors since it was a nice frigid 30 degrees outside all day.  I got a couple of kitchen cabinets purged and organized (baby steps) while the babies played with kinetic sand.  And if you don’t have any of that stuff, you should buy some immediately because they would play with it for hours!

Saturday afternoon our sweet lover of naptime, Olivia, decided to fight her nap so hard.  She screamed, kicked, and then started climbing out of her crib.  <Insert all the shocked-face emojis here>  That’s never happened.  I didn’t know what was going on or what to even do for that matter, but eventually she settled down and went to sleep… but only with just enough time to take a 45 minutes nap instead of her usual 2-3 hour nap.  Eek.

We decided to brave the cold (and the potential lack-of-sleep meltdown) to go to church, and the kids were both very well behaved.  And by behaved, I mean that Jacob fell asleep, and Olivia was extremely subdued due to her no naptime escapades earlier in the afternoon.

Afterward, we headed to one of our favorite Mexican restaurants with my mom’s whole side of the family (my grandmother, aunts, uncles, and cousins) and we warmed ourselves with tequila (margaritas) and cheese dip.  And y’all, our kids freaking love some chips and dip (salsa for Jacob, cheese dip for Olivia)!  I swear each of them probably ate an entire basket of chips by themselves.  And when I asked Jacob to smile, this is the face he gave me...

Hence the reason why pictures of him are scarce these days.  Lol.

And as if we hadn’t already pigged out enough, we stopped by DQ on the way home for some Blizzards.  Both kids didn’t even finish their mini Blizzards since their tummies were already so stuffed with Mexican food.  We built another fire when we got home, and had another evening of binge watching.  Perfect Saturday night!

After Olivia’s nap escapades Saturday afternoon, Brian and I decided that it was time to just go ahead and take the plunge – AKA convert her baby crib to a toddler bed.  So in about fifteen minutes flat, her room went from a sweet baby nursery to a big-girl toddler bedroom.  Aaaallll the tears from me!  I absolutely cannot believe that after almost six years we officially have no baby cribs in the house.  Makes me so sad.

We headed to my MIL’s for our usual Sunday lunch, and then back home for Olivia’s inaugural nap in her big girl bed.  She was quite obstinate about taking a nap once again, but when I threatened to take her paci away (yes, I know we must get rid of that thing), she laid right down.  When I left the room, I started watching her on the monitor… no more than two minutes after I had left, she sat up and jumped out of the bed, and I was thinking, “Oh, here we go!” but she immediately got right back in and snuggled down and went to sleep.  Shocked the heck out of me!

I heard her stirring about an hour and twenty minutes later so I started watching her on the monitor again.  She sat up, started looking around, and the second that she saw that the bed rail was gone, she jumped out of bed and came running out of her room.  Lol.  She is so different from Jacob.  Back when he was in a toddler bed he wouldn’t move from the thing until we came in there and got him.  And I mean never.  He never left the bed.  For months!  It was crazy.  Olivia, however, jumped right out and ran out the door on her first time.  And the worst part about it is that she only slept for an hour and twenty minutes!  Normally on Sundays she sleeps for at least 2-3 hours.  Needless to say, it just got interesting in our household.

We ended the day at my parents’ house for Sunday dinner where the kids were completely bonkers from lack of outdoor time all weekend.  Also, my mom had taken down her Christmas decor and put up some winter decor on the mantle.  Isn't it pretty?

She and my dad had also set up a new-to-them piece of furniture that my dad recently inherited.  It was my great great grandmother's old wash basin.  It's over 100 years old... how neat!

After dinner it was back home to get ready for the new week.  Jacob is finally back in school today, so we’re finally back in the full swing of things… boo!  It sure was fun while it lasted!

Have a great week, friends!  And here’s to hoping that I can make it through my first full five-day work week in over a month!

Yuck.

  1. Good luck on making it at work this week! I keep looking at the forecast hoping we'll get another snow day but it'll be close to 70 by the end of the week. Life in the South :( And I love the difference between your 2 kids! My little sister and I were that way--I obeyed everything my parents said and she rebeled in everything haha!

  2. So sad you didn't get any snow this weekend!!! Seems like you still enjoyed the cold weather with fires - so fun! Good luck with this full week back. It's going to be an adjustment for sure!

  3. Don't you hate when the weatherman gets you all excited for the weather and then it doesn't happen? Course it did for us, but a bummer for Jacob since he wanted snow. You guys had a great weekend. I hope that Olivia takes her good naps again for you since she's got a "big girl" bed now. I am dreading that day with Emmy for many reasons.

  4. What a fun weekend!! It's always so sad taking that crib away. Jack is just like Jacob and never gets out of his bed. He just now will get out occasionally after his nap. Have a great week back at work!!

  5. And so it begins. At least she is still taking naps? Does that help at all? My Emily gave up naps when she was 2, 2!!!!! Like just turned two and gave them up entirely. It was the worst. I hope the newness wears off soon and she gets back to her regular schedule for y'all. Sorry you didn't get snow too.

  6. Such a bummer about no snow! I was so wishing you would get some. And you are making me really re-think this whole giving Avery a big girl bed thing! I have a feeling naps will go out the window and bedtime will be a nightmare with that girl. The others were soooo good, both in twin beds at the exact age of 2 and never gave me any problems, but Avery, she's a pistol and I know I'm in for hell if I do it! Ughhhhh! Anyway - Friday looked like such a fun day with Jacob and we LOVE kinetic sand around here too!

  7. Oh the nap time battle. When we switched Emerson to a toddle bed he wouldn't get out of bed until we went in to get him. For months, he was so good about it. And I was so worried about it at first. Then one day he decided no more and would.not.stay in his bed and would run out of his bedroom all the time. I tried everything. I was not ready for no nap/quiet time. After he ran out of his room during the middle of the night a few times we made some changes to his door knob and yeah. We also got him a special bunny clock that lights up when you want the day to start/nap time to be over. It works wonders and he misses it when we travel. I hope Olivia adjusts well to her new big girl bed! And that sand seems so fun!

  8. Glad you and Jacob got a fun date day! That's hilarious he always picks hot wheels. I guess at least they are on the cheaper side, which makes it easier, LOL. Yay for Olivia being in a big girl bed. I have a feeling Ben isn't too far behind. He loves laying in a real bed, so we shall see! Sorry you didn't get any snow! Come here, you can have some of ours, hahahaha!

  9. Where do you get that sand!? I think Jackson would love that! So funny Olivia is running out of her bed. Jackson was like Jacob for the longest time and would cry for us to come get him, even though he wasn't 'trapped'. He did eventually figure it out after a few months though ;-) I love you and Olivia in the matching navy outfits! Sorry you didn't get any snow, come visit me any time before April, you will most likely see some haha!
And I already commented on insta but please tell me where you found that garland! I need some on my sad naked mantle ASAP! :-)

  14. Yes to Kinetic sand, my kids love that stuff, I do not however love cleaning it up, somehow half of it always ends up on the ground, despite my best efforts, but it does keep them busy for a long time. I love that you get to see both families so often on the weekends, so great! Good luck with the bed, my son was exacly like Jacob, even to this day (he's 6) still asks permission to leave his room! The girl on the other hand, totally different story.

  17. We had basically zero snowfall here, too, despite the whole town closing down preemptively, ha!! Seriously, schools were closed, and there was NO SNOW, lol. Little Man was quite disappointed! Loved all your family fun time - I wish we were closer to any of ours.

  18. You guys look like you still had a fun weekend even with no snow coming down! We had a little more than I thought but now that there is no snow and it's still freezing I'm over it!
