Friday at my
office, we had a tailgate party as a team-building exercise. We had quite a spread of tailgate dishes, we played
cornhole, and we all had a great time talking smack about opposing teams. Ya gotta love fall in the south!
Friday evening we
kept it low-key… we played out in the back yard after school and work, grabbed
a quick bite to eat at Panera, and then dropped off some of the kids’ stuff at
my parents’ house since they were staying with them all day and night Saturday.
Saturday
morning we awoke bright and early (6 AM… on a Saturday… ugh… but for a Georgia
game… totally worth it!), dropped the kids at my parents’ house, and then
headed to pick up our friends on our way out of town.
The day was extremely
cloudy, but not yet pouring rain, so we kept our fingers crossed and kept it
moving. We had been keeping an eye on
the weather all week long, and there was a 90% chance of rain with highs in the
upper 50’s to low 60’s in Athens. Not
ideal for an outdoor event.
Sure enough,
when we arrived in Athens around 11 AM, it had already started drizzling. We easily found a parking spot (I guess that’s
one benefit from the rain!) and then headed downtown to see what we could get
into until game time. We had two options
– tailgate with some of my family and friends on the other side of campus in
the rain and cold, or find a bar, stay dry and warm, and drink until the game
started. I’m sure you can guess which
option we chose!
Yep, we
ultimately decided not to meet up with my family because they were completely
on the other side of campus, and it would have been a good 30-40 minute walk
from where we had parked. In the
rain. Pass.
We found the
cutest bar/restaurant downtown called Transmetropolitan. It has a great vibe, an extensive drink menu,
and Sicilian style pizza by the slice. Yum. Brian had a slice of Hawaiian – pineapple,
ham, and extra mozzarella, and a Sicilian slice of Italian – Italian sausage,
prosciutto, peppers, and couple of different cheeses. I had a cheeseburger and fries, and their
fries were to die for! I seriously think
that they were seasoned with crack because we could not stop eating them! So.
Good.
We all ate and
chatted and our waiter kept the drinks coming.
And did I mention that he was the most awesome waiter evarrrr? We named him Luigi because of his handlebar mustache
and we couldn’t leave without taking a picture with him!
B and I have
been to Athens a gazillion times (and he lived there for four years) and neither
of us had ever been to this gem of a restaurant until this trip. If you’re ever in Athens, you most definitely
need to check it out!
A couple of
hours before game time, we left our warm, dry, beer-filled cocoon and headed
toward the stadium. We stopped at a friends’
tailgate for some quick drinks, stopped at our favorite store to grab a Georgia
polo for Jacob, and then we headed to the stadium. The feeling in the air was electric despite
the rain, and they had some seriously crunk music playing in the stadium to get
everyone hyped up for the game.
Hershel Walker
was out on the field to get everyone excited, and Philip Phillips was there as
well… although I only knew that because he posted a picture on Instagram… I’m
such a stalker. ;o)
Weather-wise,
for the entire first quarter it just misted.
It did pick up a little in the second quarter, but then it totally
stopped during halftime. And the
halftime show was a little different than usual for this game… As you may know, Miss America is from Georgia
this year and apparently once you become Miss America you can no longer serve
as the state representative, so the runner-up from that state becomes the state
representative. Well, the runner up for
Miss Georgia is Adeline Kenerly who is a student at UGA, (and also the
girlfriend of our quarterback, Greyson Lambert) and Miss America was there to
crown her as the new Miss Georgia for our halftime show.
Too bad our
team didn’t show up and give her a win to make her day even more special.
A few minutes
into the third quarter we were taking a good woodshed beating, and it started pouring, so we decided to call it a night and head back to the car. We made the 25 minute walk back to the car in
the pouring rain, but fortunately I had worn my trusty Hunter boots and a
poncho so I was still bone dry with the exception of a four
inch section on my leggings where my boots stopped and my poncho didn’t quite
reach. #HunterBootsFTW
We stopped at
Applebee’s just outside of Athens on the way home for a leisurely dinner (and to catch up on the
Florida vs. Ole Miss game) and I ran into these two – my aunt and uncle whose
tailgate we had missed earlier in the day!
We made it home
around 11, got snuggly in our PJs, and watched more football. And did I mention that it was glorious not having to wrangle two kids
to bed when we got home?! And to be able
to sleep until we awoke on Sunday?! I
adore my babies, but it’s so nice to have a break every now and then.
By Sunday
morning I was missing them fiercely, so we met my parents and the babies at
Dunkin Donuts for breakfast. Perfect for
yet another dreary day.
After
breakfast, we took the kids out for a couple of errands – new shoes for Olivia
and Brian, and some Halloween costume shopping for the kids. This is how the kids felt about shoe shopping.
But they sure
did love the Halloween costume shopping!
We ate a light
lunch at home, put Olivia down for her nap (and Jacob for quiet time), and I
caught up on some picture organizing in my office while B watched the Falcons
win.
We rounded out
the day at my parents’ house to celebrate my littlest brother’s birthday, and
the kids finished the day dancing around in their new skeleton PJs.
I hope your weekends were as festive as ours and I hope you have a fantastic work week! Mine is only four days this week so I know I will! :o)
